This cd was one I was really looking forward to hear because there were not any sound boards from '77 except for from June 1977. I first must mention that the sound on this Cd is great. The Cd starts with a fade in to "Are you Lonesome Tonight" and Elvis messes up and has to get one of the Sweets to help him out with the lyrics. He then messes up the spoken part up badly. It is sad to see a man once only 2 months before giving a wonderful performance do such a bad job. Anyway it is obvious that his medication has taken a toll on him tonight. He finishes the song on a strong note. He then goes on to "Reconsider Baby" He gives a strong performance. It is better than the Madison Square Garden version from 1972. He plays his guitar well. He says he did the song a month and a half ago. I think that means from the New Years Eve show. He gives a good performance. Next he trys "That's all Right" but he starts to play it and says his guitar is out of tune. Charlie Hodge offers to tune it but Elvis says "I aint got time to fool with it.". He also says "Sombody Forgot To tune the guitar". "Love Me" Is okay. He then says he will try his latest record. He says they tried it last night but it didn't work out. He goes into it strongly but after about a minuet it starts to sound terrible. He says at the end "Boy, I'm glad you learned it 'cause I don't know the key, the chord changes, pr nothin'". You Gave Me a Mountain is next it's okay not great. Jailhouse Rock is typical 1977 version; it's rushed and sung like a wimp. Next is It'ws Nor or never again not great but probebly the best so far. He seems to put a little more soul into this one. "Little Sister" Is terrible. He pays too much attention to the audience and doesn't sing well. No effort. "Teddy bear/Don't be cruel" is better than it would later be, but not as good as it had been before. My Way is stronger but again not quite as good as it would be later. He almost forgets the words to this one. He says in the intro that "I forgot this one too". Hurt is one of the weakest versions I have heard. Elvis is not very strong in the voice and at the end he can't decide weather to go higher or not. Evidently he decides not but the resault is off key. His voice is slurred when he askes J.D. Sumner and the Stamps to sing "Why we Lord". Elvis talkes in a very high and funny voice while J.D. is singing and the resault is funny. Elvis tries to join in on the chorus but the song is in the wrong key and Elvis stops the band and makes them change the key. The overall performance is not bad for a song not rehersed in 2 years. Polk Salad Annie is good. The band rocks it but Elvis sings like how the bad immitators of him sing and he sounds like an old man. The sound is real good though.
Now we are pulled back in time to the 16th of Febuary . Some one in the audience hands Elvis a peice of womans clothing and Elvis puts it in front of him to make it look like he is wearing it. This generates laughs from the audience. He says he thinks he'll just give it to Lisa. Elvis sings where no one stands alone. He says it is the first time he has done it on stage and it has never been rehersed and he will play the piano because he knows the chord changes. The performance is breath taking. Elvis is at his best at this moment as he sing about the lord. It is very powerful and his voice is great. He then askes if the audience would not mind if he sang unchained melody at the piano. He says "I know you can't see me, but I see you" :) This performance is great as well there are better versions but this time is great as well. We then says farewell and sing "Can't Help..." It is a closing performance so it is natural that he spends more time with the audience than singing. The performance from the 21st is bad he is tired and drugged, and it is the last day of the tour. What we have from the 16th is great! Only get this one if you are a hard - cre collector for the others get the outtakes from Elvis in Concert instead.
